Tranquility
As stated in the preamble; justice, domestic tranquility, common defense, general welfare, and liberty.
Insuring domestic tranquility is essentially insuring "peace in the land." In order to mantain this peace, however, sometimes it is necessary to give up some of our rights. For example, one blessing of liberty that we are given is freedom of speech. If, however, someone yells out "Fire!" at a public event, or "Bomb!" on an airplane; that person better be ready to face the consequences. If he argues freedom of speech then this comes into conflict between domestic tranquility and securing blessings of liberty. Which is more important? Sometimes, it is necessary to deny the rights of an individual in order to preserve the tranquility of the people as a whole.
It means that the citizens of America will establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and prosperity, and ordain and establish the constitution just so they can form a more perfect America. :D
In 1787, tranquility referred to a state of peace, calm, and order in society or politics. It was often seen as essential for the functioning of a stable government and the well-being of the citizenry. The concept of tranquility was a common goal among leaders during this time period, especially in the aftermath of conflict and turmoil such as the American Revolutionary War.
