No the gases that surround the planet trap heat like a green house. We call this process the green house effect.
Mercury is colder then Earth (at night) when its facing away from the sun, mercury doesnt have an atmosphere to keep the heat in so once it faces away from the sun the heat from the sun cant get to the dark side of mercury, therefore its cold at the dark side of mercury.
