You simply need a memory stick. However; having a harddrive is highly recomended. Having a harddrive allows you to save your games and you actually need a harddrive to play backwards compatible games from the original x box. If you are looking into buying your first X 360 I recomend buying a 360 Arcade. It is a 360 without a harddrive, it comes with 256mb space of memory. It is only $199. If you wish to add a harddrive to it, you can go to your local used game store such as GameStop or if you are lucky enough to live near one, I recomend getting one from a PLay N Trade. Normally a harddrive will cost you about $40. But all in all you DO NOT need a harddrive to access and play in X BOX Live.
