In a 1998 Ford Escort :
Yes , the SOHC engine IS an interference engine
No , the DOHC engine IS NOT an interference engine
( according to Gates - they make timing belts etc. )
I just broke a timing belt on my 98 Escort SOHC. (Aug 29, 2010) I have gotten mixed answers on the internet as to whether or not it is an interference engine. Even the Gates website says two different things. Finally, I called Ford Service, three different dealerships. All three said very definitively that it is *not* an interference engine...that I should be able to stick a new timing belt on it and be good to go. One dealership said that Ford hasn't made an interference engine for *any* model in twenty years.."we make them better than that" he said.
If this is the European Escort this is an interference engine.
Yes , according to the Gates website ( they make timing belts etcetera ) both the 2.0 liter DOHC and SOHC engines used in a 1998 Ford Escort are INTERFERENCE engines
I believe the Ford Escort 1.9L engine is non-interference.
In a 1998 Ford Escort : The 2.0 L - DOHC - 4 cylinder ( IS NOT ) an interference engine ( but the 2.0 L - SOHC - 4 cylinder engine IS an interference engine ) Just check with you local Ford dealer. I know from asking the dealer that the 2.0 single cam is not a interference engine. I have replace broken belts in many escort 93-2000 that it is not a interference engine. You can rotate the cam and crank, with the belt off, with no contact.
