Parallel.
Yes, it is only the pistons that are different to provide a different compression ratio (higher in the NA). Be careful when bolting turbos to an NA motor.
yes they are both vg30s the same block. The difference is the turbos.
In fact any turbo can be used on any turboed car. It will just have to be custom fitted. The real issue here is that the 94 Z is twin turbo while the 87 Z is single turbo.
The turbos can be removed and replaced with an upgrade. So surely you can remove them out and run the car w/o. The question is, why would you want to?
Yeah it's called buying a 300zx twin turbo engine (vg30dett). Much better than making a non turbo into a turbo. The vg30dett costs around $2000 and comes with the transmission which you will need. This is better than putting turbos on your n/a z because the vg30dett comes stock with forged internals which allow you to use a lot of boost. For $3000 you can have the engine,turbos,and tranny bought and installed. For another $1000 or so you can have near 400hp.
Yes, they run in a sequential setup. The other turbo will start to spool up after a certain engine speed is achieved. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-turbo#Sequential_turbos
That depends on which model you have, but it either used a Garret T3 ('84-'87) or T25 ('88-'00). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the 1990-1996 Nissan 300ZX (Z32) the stock turbos are two (2) T25 turbos. Note: The automatic transmission models come with a smaller Turbine A/R than the Manual transmission. So, the automatic's turbos might spool a tiny bit faster, but will die off sooner in the higher RPM's I have no knowledge of the previous model 300ZX's turbos, sorry. Of course it will. If we're talking about 90+ models. The two engines are mostly the same. The difference is the turbos and the engine internals. The n/a uses a vg30de and the twin turbo uses a vg30dett. Basically buy a jdm vg30dett and pop it right in. Be prepared to spend a lot of money if you do this, though.
The reliable way is to get new turbos, probably around $1200 for upgraded ones. Labor could be a lot, because you have to remove the engine to replace them.
It will say twin turbo on the engine. Or, you will be able to see extra intake piping that goes to the turbos and intercoolers. It's probably best to just look up the VIN to make sure though.
Turbo = 1 turbo, Twin Turbo = 2 turbos
There are many places online that sell turbos. Some of the popular places you can find them are Turbo By Garrett, Turbos Rugby, Precision Turbo and even on eBay.
