You might call the little knobs dotting the surface of your tongue taste buds, but you'd be wrong. Those are papillae, and there are four kinds of them: fungi-form and filiform on the front half, foliate and vallate on the back. The actual taste buds, described variously as resembling either tiny navel Oranges or onions, cluster together in packs of two to 250 within the papillae.

The average adult reportedly has approximately 10,000 taste buds, but children have more, including some dotted along the inside of their cheeks.
