If it's just the power unit, with no trailer attached, they can do it with a Class B. But they must have a CDL to take that vehicle on a public roadway.

Do I need a special license to drive a flat bed truck?

It depends on what class the vehicle is. There are certain weight limits and it makes up the various classes for the truck. If it is a big truck you will need a commercial drivers license to be able to drive it just a mile down the road. Check and see what class the vehicle is and then you will know if you need a cdl.

Do you need a truck to get a class b license?

Yes. You're required to take a road test for the licence, and the DMV does not provide a vehicle.

Do we need a special license for local truck driving jobs?

If the truck you are driving weighs in excess of 18,000 pounds you will need a CDL license which requires a written and road test. If you are looking at driving something such as a FedEx or UPS truck, you need a CDL Class C license.

Does a mechanic need a CDL to road test fire trucks?

He needs a CDL to drive a fire truck on the highway. Most heavy duty truck mechanics have that license. In my state (CT) you can drive a fire truck with a Class B (straight truck CDL) or what we call a Q endorsement which is a fire apparatus only endorsement of your normal license. You take the Class B test and they'll give you just the Q. I don't think its as "governed" as the CDL is. On another note the Q endorsement lets you drive any FD truck from the little ones to the 80,000 lb ladder truck if you get checked out on it. I understand the intent of the law or allowance I should say, but there are considerations, hazards, and skill about handling that kind of weight which was covered in my Class A CDL class that weren't really mentioned on my Q. If that ladder was a commercial vehicle you would need an A license for that weight.

How much training does a truck driver need to obtain a passenger endorsement?

All you have to do to get the endorsement is pass the written test and road test in a passenger vehicle. However, if you have a Class A CDL and road test in a vehicle requiring only a Class C CDL, you'll be restricted to operating passenger vehicles in that class and lower.

What is the average weight for off road trucks?

In Championship off road racing there are a number of different truck classes. The Pro Lite class must have a minimum weight of 2,800 pounds. The Pro class must have a minimum weight of 3,400 pounds. These weights would likely be representative of off road truck weights.

How do you get a dump truck to take a test in for class b?

Find someone who'll employ you once you have a CDL, and will offer their truck for the road test. It doesn't have to be a dump truck. You could rent a 33k single axle truck from Penske with an automatic and air brakes, and, according to the DOT, it would qualify you to drive a Class 8 dump truck.
