Does a power steering pump sound like a roar when its going bad?

yes it does because the fluid level in steering rack drops and airlock develops that why it cause the roaring sound

You can not remove a power steering pump on your car and expect it to handle like a car with out power steering. Removing the pump will make it very hard to steer because the rest of the steering components are made for power steering.

It does sound like the pump is on it's way out. When you steer the car is the pump making a noise? If so then your pump is going out. You might want to have you power steering hoses checked out too. One of them could maybe be bad and sucking in air which could be leading to your intermittint problems.
