A lot of schools have temp services they contract through to get substitute teachers, Google substitute teachers and the state and the different agencies should come up. The process has several steps to it, usually most of the applications are provided through the agency's website in pdf format that you can download, print, and fax or mail back to the agency. These include forms for a background check, fingerprinting (costs around $60 to be fingerprinted), etc. you can expect to have 20-30 forms that you will need to fill out.
You also need some college, it varies by State as to how many college credits that you need, but in my State you need at least 90 credits of college. At least 90 credits must all be on the same transcript from a four year college, they can be transfer credits from a 2 year but must show up on the transcript from a four year college, they prefer at least a Bachelors though. They will also require for you to either attend a one day training at a location or take the training modules online. Lastly, once you are approved then you will need to ask the agency to apply for a substitute teaching certificate (around $45) for you, this certificate must be renewed at the end of each school year (around Aug or Sept of each year) no matter how late in the school year that you get it. I just recently went through this process and have been on my first teaching assignment, so I am speaking from experience.
