Not really, the babies stay with mother until they are about 6 month old then start to go off on their own. At my last house we had a mother who would bring her new babies up on our deck at least twice a week in early spring to share the cat food we left for our outside cats. As the brood got older they started becoming very independent.

Yes, even while the kits are still infants and nursing, the mother will leave them for short times to forage for food. If she doesn't eat, she doesn't produce milk for the young ones. As the babies are weaned at 8-10 weeks of age, they will follow the mother on foraging expeditions to learn how to find food. They usually will stay with the mother through the first winter and then go out on their own in the spring.

The male raccoon breeds with the female in late winter and spring and then leaves. He does not stay with the female. The female, alone, raises the babies.

How long should the father rabbit stay away from mother and babies?

Until the babies are grown enough to leave the mother and separated into other cages. If you reintroduce the father he may get jealous of the attention the mother is giving to the babies and hurt the babies or kill them because he isn't getting the attention. Also, if you reintroduce the father when the babies are grown, the father might mate with the mother AND the females of the litter and then OOPS... more babies!

Does a mother raccoon eat her young?

It is not normal for a raccoon to eat her young unless there was a problem:1.) The mother is immature and does not have any mothering skills. 2.) The babies suffer from some genetic problem that might prevent them from living a normal life. Normally, the mother would just remove them from the den and leave them to die elsewhere, however. 3.) Something has highly stressed the mother, perhaps an attack from a predator.
