A transmission is at the back portion of a motor and has nothing to do with the timing belt. That is on the face of a motor at the other end from a transmisiioon.

First answerer is correct. If you are looking at your engine from the front of the car the transmission is on your right side. The timing belt is clear over on the other side of the cars engine/transmission assembly on the left side of the car. If your mechanic said you HAD to change it with the transmission he lied. On the other hand if your mechanic "recommended" that you change it while he had it all dropped out of the car he is probably giving you some good advice. The timing belt on a Camry does need to be replaced periodically because if it breaks severe damage to your engine may result.
