  • I have been told that it does. I have one vehicle with air conditioning and when I turn on the air I can hear the motor lug just a little. The compressor that circulates the gas that creates the cooling must require some energy from the motor therefore taking some energy from what goes to the drive train. When the air is off, the compressor free spins and saps no energy from the motor. Since I am not an expert, this an opinion rather than a fact.
  • I have seen quite a few studies, that confirmed that a car uses less fuel with the A/C on at highway speeds, as compared to the same vehicle traveling with the windows down and A/C off. The open windows create more drag than does the compressor and that decreases mpg. In city driving it definitely uses more fuel with the A/C on.
  • Yes it will use a little more fuel in around town driving. But open highway driving; It takes the same amount of fuel due to drag withthe windows open as
  • with the A/C on. So either way the fuel mpg is the same on highway driving. The comfort in town and short trips, heck use the air if need be.

How often does one have to clean out air conditioning filters?

Air conditioning filters have to be cleaned at least every three months. Dirty air conditioning filters can increase energy consumption of air conditioners.

Does using an automobile air conditioner while driving increase fuel consumption?

yes

What causes high fuel consumption in a diesel engine?

There are several causes for high fuel consumption in a diesel engine. These include a difference in the weight of the vehicle, increased usage of air conditioning, and a difference in tire pressure.

Why does fuel consumption increase when air con on in car?

Air conditioning uses a compressor to chill the freon that cools the air. The compressor requires a good bit of power to run- and places an additional load on the engine. This requires the engine to burn more fuel, and your gas mileage decreases. There is no free lunch- the power to run that compressor had to come from somewhere, right?

Does load affects fuel consumption per hour of a diesel generator?

If the generator is to maintain the same rpm and power output, then a heavier load will increase the diesel consumption. The revolutions per minute the generator runs will increase as the load increases, thereby resulting in an increase in diesel consumption to maintain the high rpm. A Generator has a governor which attempts to maintain frequency at 60 Hz for North America. For the generator to increase the power output at the same frequency, the governor will increase the fuel and air to the engine. The fuel consumption will not be linear because of the curves associated with the particular engine. The fuel to KWH is know as the heat rate curve for the generator.

Why does air conditioning use more fuel?

Because the air conditioning compressor, is run from a pulley off of the engine. This puts an additional load on the engine, which causes more fuel to be used.

What if everyone owns a helicopter?

There would have to be more helipads. The ATC staff will have to increase tremendously. There will be lesser traffic on roads and more in the air. Fuel Consumption would sky-rocket.

Does car air conditioning use fuel?

The air conditioning compressor is belt driven from the engine. While compressor is on it adds another load to the engine. Therefore; yes it does require additional fuel to be used to compensate for the additional engine load.
