On '79 to '93 models, all were equipped with 4 lug wheels with exception of the '93 Cobra R. All '94 and newer models came with 5 lug wheels.

No! A general rule of thumb is, if the engine has 6 cylinders, it will have 4 lug rims. If the engine has 8 cylinders, it will have 5 lug rims. The exception to this rule may be the Mustangs built from 1974 through 1978, I believe these were all 4 lug rims.

So, if you are looking at a 1965 - 1973 Mustang and it has a V8, look to see if it has 4 or 5 lug wheels. If it has 4 lugs, the motor was replaced. This is only a big concern with the 65/66 models in that, those years with V8's came with heavier duty coil springs, 5 lug wheels and front, non power assisted, disc brakes. The concern is the additional weight and speed capability of a V8 powered Mustang justified these differences. Some excellent reading is a book titled MUSTANG DOES IT. The copy I have was written in the late 1970's before the current Mustang hype in many of today's books. One note of interest is, Dearborn never made a 1964 1/4 Mustang. It was simply a 1965 which was sold midyear in 1964. The 1965 Mustang was first introduced in January of 1964 (some were lent to the Rose Parade Committee) because Ford was looking for public feedback. Feedback was so great and positive, FORD decided they should not wait until the end of the year (as is still done today) to sell the new design. Therefore, the 1965 Mustang was sold in the middle of 1964.

Amazon.com gets out of print copies of this book and reading it will back up all I have stated.
