In OO you have to highlight the word before alt-clicking on it.
Sometimes there emoticons on them but if not <3 or Click num lock and then click Alt and at the same time while holding down alt click 3 so alt 3 gives you this: ♥

Wihtout further information, it is quite hard to answer, but let me try. Make sure no other applications are using that combination of keys. For example, if you're using Ubuntu with CompizConfig Settings Manager, and you have enabled Move Window, the default combination to start a window move is Alt+Button1 (alt+click). Choose a different combination for it and it should be solved.
