yes if it has a fault. Either a bearing has gone - in which case you should hear a noise. Or the rectifier has a fault (probably a short circuit) in which case things can get very hot and you will see smoke.
91 Honda accord the alternator is getting hot
poss alternator fault
No it can not. If the belt is missing that could cause it to run hot.
The alternator is going bad, may need to be replaced soon
First you need to unclip the wiring harness, the unscrew the hot wire, then loosen the tensioner, the at the bottom of the alternator the is a big screw that holds it in unscrew that and pull the screw out and boom the alternator is out!!
Battery is run down or on it's way out.
because you forgot to put lube on it
You probably have your AC on. This draws more current from the alternator. You can have a loose alternator belt, or a bad alternator. Try it with AC off. (if this is what you're doing)..Tom
is your battery Low or poor?? Charge your battery on slow charge for 8hrs to give it a good deep charge, Installing an alternator on a low or dead battery will ruin it and also not charge your battery properly.. An alternator is not a battery charger its a battery maintainer!!
Check for the impellor or fan rubbing on the casing. Check for worm bearings. If the alternator is running at full load the casing will become hot
disconect batt unplug back of the alternator take hot wire off back of alternator 10 mm wrench un bolt two mounting bolts 15 mm and remove easy job
assuming that no one has cut a wire, the alternator is probably bad. could be a fuse. Depending on car, it could be a fusible link. Process of elimination. The main large wire on the back of the alternator runs to the battery. Should be smaller wire on the positive cable.
