no they have only one contractile vacuole because of it's environment, soil or water. A paramecium has two contractile vacuoles.

Why would you expect a freshwater amoeba to be more likely to have contractile vacuoles than a marine amoeba?

Because the surrounding freshwater concentration is higher than the salt concentration inside and so all the water from the vacuoles has left because of osomosis. while the marine amoeba has the surrounding salt concentration equal to the concentration inside the vacuole.

How protozoa maintain their osmotic balance?

Protozoans such as an amoeba lack a supporting cell wall and instead have a contractile vacuole that pumps out excess water that enters the cell by osmosis. This vacuole is not needed in organisms with more than one cell.

Why would you expect a freshwater amoeba to be more likely to ha contractile vacuoles than marine amoeba would?

Marine amoebae live in a saltwater environment. If the vacuoles take in too much salt, it'll suck all the liquidy stuff out of the amoeba itself. Freshwater amoebae are in a freshwater environment so they don't have to worry about that.

Why a protist living in salt water doesn't need a contractile vacuole?

Protists have salt particles inside their cytoplasm. When they are in freshwater the concentration of salt particles inside is higher than outside... however when they are in salt water the concentration is equally spread... (diffusion) the contractile vacuole job is to remove excess water... but if its in saltwater.. there isn't a need because. Of the diffusion that takes place.

Do amoebas osmoregulate?

First i will like to introduce you to Osmoregulation Osmoregulation is the ability of an organism to maintain a constant osmotic pressure within the blood and tissue fluid. Different chemical activities in the body produce many by-products several of which are wastes. These waste products if allowed to accumulate will turn out to be toxic and affect the physiological activities of the body cells. These wastes have to be expelled out or it may eventually result in the death of the organism. Excretion is performed by the contractile vacuole. The content within the tissues of amoeba is hypotonic due to the salt concentration. so water turns to enter the cells rapidly than it is needed. The excess water if not expelled will eventually burst the cells. some of this excess water then diffuse into the contractile vacoule gradually and gradually until the vacuole becames turgid. The water is then expelled by diffusion out of the cells. By A.Smith

Why Amoeba needs contractile vacuole?

If the solution inside the amoeba is more concentrated than the outside, the water will diffuse into the cell through osmosis and eventually cause it to burst when there is way too much. The contractile vacuole prevents it from bursting by pumping water back out.

How does an amoeba cope with high water concentration?

Amoeba have special vacuoles that fill up with water, then moves outside of the cell and bursts. The concentration of water outside the amoeba is higher than inside the cell, because the vacuole contains mineral salts. So the concentration of water inside the vacuole is low. Therefore water molecules move from outside of the cell into the vacuole due to osmosis. Then when the vacuole becomes full it goes outside of the cell and bursts. A new vacuole is then made.

How many time larger is the giant amoeba than the smallest bacterium?

The largest amoeba is more than 2,500 times larger than the smallest bacterium.

What organelle does both plant and animal cell have?

they both have a vacuole. The plant cell has bigger vacuole than the animal cell. The animal cell has more than one vacuole, but they are really small

Why do larger organisms need a circulatory system and amoeba do not?

We are eukaryote which means are cells are more advanced than there's. And since we have more cells than a amoeba. Our cells carry oxygen to the brain and other organs in the body. A amoeba dose not have a brain. So it doesn't need a circulatory system.

How does an amoeba reproduce show diagram?

They repoduce asexually by mitosis - the genetic material is duplicated and split to opposite ends of the cell, then the middle of the cell is cleved to form two distinct cells, with about half of the cellular ultra structure going to each cell. Look up mitosis on the Internet - there will be no shortage of pictures and even animation of this process taking place :)
