A mix of baking soda and peroxide can actually be good for your gums. But if you brush hard on your teeth while using the mix, it can slowly scratch the enamel. It is best to apply the mix with a Q-tip.
I've been using it to gargle with for about 3 years. I don't know if it whitens your teeth or not (being a coffee drinker, I'll be staining more than whitening) but it sure helps get rid of the morning squirrels without gawdawful alcohol Listerine.
