AnswerEver notice that you usually get burned far worse when swimming? The answer to your question is actually yes. Being under water does protect you. But of course unless you are Scuba diving you will likely be above water with at least your head for the bulk of the time you spend in the water. What happens in this case is that the water reflects the sun back up at your face and you end up getting burned almost twice as fast. So if you don't want to get burned either wear sunscreen or get really good at holding your breath!
