Outwardly, the purpose of the reservations were to give the Indian their own lands. However, the real reasons were much more insidious. It was a place to contain the Indian in conditions mostly unbearable. It was designed to "break" the Indian spirit which is the one thing the white man could not do. Also it was mostly designed to eradicate the Indian. Mountain Indians were given reservations in the swamp. Forest Indiand got land in the deserts. And tribes who had long histories of being enemies got lands that bordered one another in hopes of them killing each other off.

The very first Indian reservation in North America was established on August 1, 1758 in New Jersey by the New Jersey Colonial Assembly. It was a "permanent home" for the Lenni-Lenape people. It was established in Burlington County. After many events, the Nj Assembly agreed to sell the reservation and give the profits to the remaining tribal members, which now only numbered 85. Hope This Helps! :) Nope--the first are the Mattaponi Indian Reservation and the Pamunkey Reservations. They were established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1658 and both are still in existence today. The Mashantucket Pequot Indian Reservation was created by the Connecticut Colony in 1666. The reservation still exists on the Thames River in New London County near the town of Ledyard in Connecticut. Over the years, the state took more and more of the reservation as some of the people left in order to survive. If it had not been for the last three elderly women who remained on the reservation, it would have ended up being sold like the one in New Jersey--but those three ladies gathered their families and other Pequot together in 1970 and the people fought to have their stolen land restored and some of it was returned. This first reservation still exists today. Try again...the first reservation was established by the Puritans in 1638 near New Haven, CT. for the Quinnipiac Indians.

Thomas Edison was a very generous and philanthropic man. After he perfected the light bulb he toured the United States displaying his invention. While in the West he stopped at an Indian reservation and was appalled at the deplorable conditions. Being the very generous and philanthropic man that he was, he decided to do something to alleviate the plight of the Indians. And in a moment of PR genius he decided to install his new invention in all the Indian's outhouses. From that day on, Thomas Edison was also known as: The first man to wire a head for a reservation.

There are a number of advantages of making an airline reservation, this include being guaranteed a seat on the plane, being re-seated on another flight if the initial flight is cancelled, as well as not being stranded in a location due to being unable to obtain an adequate flight. It is often cheaper to make a reservation in advance >60 days is best.
