Humans are complex social creatures. We strive for others to take attention of us and we strive to have beneficial relationships with others, whether they bey friendship, companionship or love.
In a good relationship we feel happy, secure and loved. Maybe those who had a bad relationship will feel relived to be single for a while because they can now take a rest from the bad relationship they were part of and are hence happier single at that moment in time than they were in the relationship. However sooner or later that individual will again feel the need for a loving companionship again and will be unhappy being single.
There is no answer because we are all different.
