No, there is no proof that Bigfoot exists, let alone that they go around braiding horse hair. The most likely answer is matting. If you search "matted horse hair" on Google images, you will see numerous pictures that look similar to supposed pictures of horses who have had their hair braided. Most importantly, bigfoot is one of numerous mythological creatures to be associated with tangled hair. For instance, goblins, gnomes, elves, and witches have all been used as explanations for matted horse manes. The earliest reference I've been able to find goes back to 13th-century France. However, the legend surely goes back further than this since man domesticated the horse long ago.
