No - Butalbital is a barbiturate, and is used by itself and with other drugs like aspirin and codeine to form analgesic combination drugs. It's primary uses are as a relaxant and in analgesics an assistant in pain reduction. The brand name drug Fiorinal contains Butalbital. Penicillin is an antibiotic, used to fight infections.
One certain medication prescribed for migraines contains a barbiturate (butalbital) There are three formulations: Fioricet - butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine Fioricet with codeine - butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine, codeine Fiorinal - butalbital, aspirin, caffeine No other medications prescribed for migraine contain barbiturates. Barbiturates as a drug class have been phased out nearly completely by benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, etc..), although some barbiturates are still used to treat epilepsy (and even then, there are many, many newer anti-epilepsy medications for a doctor to choose from).
No - Fiorinal is a combination of Aspirin, Butalbital (a barbiturate) and Caffeine. It's only an opiate analgesic when it's combined with Codeine.
NO. Ibuprofen is an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). Ibuprofen is the main ingredient in Motrin and Advil. Ibuprofen is non-narcotic, and is available without a prescription.Butalbital is a barbiturate often combined with other medications such as aspirin or acetominophen, caffeine and codeine. It is often prescribed for headaches. Butalbital is a Schedule III controlled substance, and is only available with a prescription.
no. butalbital is a barbituate, lortab is an opiad based drug
What is the effect of ridilan Valium and butalbital taken together
It is a mixture of Aspirin, butalbital and caffeine, Butalbital is a short- to intermediate-acting barbiturate
The only barbiturate currently used to treat headaches (tension, migraine, or cluster headaches) is butalibital. It comes in the following forms: Fioricet (butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine) Fiorinal (butalbital, aspirin, caffeine) Fioricet w/ codeine (butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine, codeine) In the 60's and 70's, barbiturates were prescribed more commonly to treat a number of things. With the invention of things like the triptans (eg, Imitrex) for migraine and benzodiazepines (eg, Ativan, Xanax) for anxiety and many, many anti-seizure medications, barbiturates have been mostly phased out, quite a lot of them not being made any more. The blends of butalbital listed above have actually been phased out in many countries. It has been shown to do more harm than good and has a higher probability than many other compound medications (like Percocet or Excedrin) at causing transformed migraine due to medication overuse.
If you go to Wikipedia and look up barbiturates you should be able to find a list of more/less all of them. However in terms of a list only listing the currently available barbiturates that is impossible to find. Most barbiturate lists you might find either leave out a number of drugs or were written in the 90's or around 2001 so they are not accurate. The most accurate barbiturate list I know of is from a paper on barbiturates so it is not a stand alone list. I can tell you the currently available barbiturates in The United States as of the time I am writing this (01/02/2012). Just in the last year two of the few remaining barbiturates still on the market are no longer available (both due to fairly uncommon situations, hopefully one of them will become available again. Barbiturates currently available- Luminal (phenobarbital) Nembutal (pentobarbital) Seconal (secobarbital) Butisol (butabarbital) Amytal Sodium (amobarbital sodium) Brevital Sodium (methohexital sodium) Butalbital (see below) Recently discontinued: Mebaral (mephobarbital) Pentothal (thiopental sodium) Technically not classified as a barbiturate (although some barbiturate lists do include it) however one of its primary active metabolites it phenobarbital. Mysoline (primidone) Barbiturate combination drugs- Donnatal (belladonna alkaloids/phenobarbital) Fioricet (butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine) Fiorinal (butalbital/aspirin/caffeine) Fioricet with codeine (butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine/codeine) Fiorinal with codeine (butalbital/aspirin/caffeine/codeine)
Butalbital should NOT be taken on a daily basis, it is addictive and long term use can also cause hepatotoxicity, especially if it is a Butalbital/Acetaminophen combination medication. It should be taken sparingly, when needed for treatment of headache pain.
Normally a Butalbital is used for Tension Headaches and used properly can stop a Migrane before it starts if you get the Auroa before a headache and take the Butalbital as soon as you sense you are getting the migrane it will help. Fiorcet is good place to start if you want more information on this drug.
