What is a dealership fee when buying a used car?

A dealership fee is usually known as a Documentary Fee or Doc Fee. It also depends on the dealership. We only charge a Doc Fee where other dealers may have other fees that they charge for and assign them a different name.

Is there a state limit in Illinois for a doc fee when buying a new car?

Yes, it's $150, but it's not a law. They (dealers) don't have to charge it, but they will. IT IS NOT A TAX IT'S A FEE, they lobbied for (donated money to IL politicians campaigns). Just make sure you remember to subtract $150 when negotiating price. Do not tell them what your doing, or be obvious about it. Whatever number works for you, offer $200 less to cover the doc fee, let them work the other $50 out of you. "DOCUMENTARY FEE. A DOCUMENTARY FEE IS NOT AN OFFICIAL FEE. A DOCUMENTARY FEE IS NOT REQUIRED BY LAW, BUT MAY BE CHARGED TO BUYERS FOR HANDLING DOCUMENTS AND PERFORMING SERVICES RELATED TO CLOSING OF A SALE. THE BASE DOCUMENTARY FEE BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 2008, WAS $150. THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT THAT MAY BE CHARGED FOR A DOCUMENTARY FEE IS THE BASE DOCUMENTARY FEE OF $150 WHICH SHALL BE SUBJECT TO AN ANNUAL RATE ADJUSTMENT EQUAL TO THE PERCENTAGE OF CHANGE IN THE BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS CONSUMER PRICE INDEX. THIS NOTICE IS REQUIRED BY LAW." (Source: P.A. 95 280, eff. 1 1 08.)

There is no buyer's remorse law in Virginia. You cannot return a new car unless the dealer will allow you to. They will usually require a fee of some sort to restock the car.

How can you get a copy of a bill of sale at a car auction?

You can get a copy of the purchase receipt from the auction if you are the buyer however car auctions don't work on a bill of sale. They have the title follow the car from seller to buyer. If the seller fails to provide the title prior to the start of the auction they are charged a fee which is typically around $50. They have 30 days to produce the title to the auction. If they fail to do so the buyer can return the car to the auction and get a full refund of purchase price.

Does the buyer of a car in a private party transaction have to pay a USE tax to the state of California?

I believe that fee, if you have to pay it, would be included in the taxes and fees you pay at the DMV when you re-register the car under your (the buyer's) name. I have not heard of a use tax, but I know you do have to pay a certain percentage of what your purchasing price was in taxes to the state of CA, in addition to the regular registration fee that is normally paid. I hope that was slightly helpful.

How is a buyer's agent compensated?

What are the selling or consignment fees for used cars?

The fees for selling a car on consignment are as follows: Auction Houses : hammer price > $7-10,000 average fees: 10% to the Seller and 10-17% Buyer Premium. *(the Buyer's Premium may cause a lower selling price and net the Seller less)* Some auctions charge a flat entry fee, but also have the 10% Buyer Premium, which generally affects the hammer price. Auctions will draw a lot of dealers, so it can be a great place for the buyer.
