After getting chemotherapy treatment for your T cell lymphoma 4 months ago, your PSA level should have been really low after your prostate test. It is normal for your PSA levels to fluctuate quite a bit after treatment though.

It is more common in people ages 45 - 70.Patients who have a weakened immune system are at greater risk for primary lymphoma of the brain. Common causes of a weakened immune system include:HIVOrgan transplants (especially heart transplants)Primary lymphoma of the brain is also linked to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection, the virus that causes mononucleosis. The rate of primary brain lymphoma is rising, but it is still relatively rare.SymptomsChanges in speechChanges in visionConfusionFeverHallucinationsHeadachesNumbness to hot, cold, and painPersonality changesSeizuresWeakness in handsWeight lossSigns and testsThe following tests may be performed to help diagnose a primary lymphoma of the brain:Biopsy of the brainCSF cell countCSF total proteinHead CT scan or MRITreatmentThe condition is usually first treated with corticosteroids to control any local swelling and improve symptoms. However, chemotherapy may increase survival by 3 - 4 years, or longer. The chemotherapy is usually high doses of methotrexate given through a vein (intravenously) or a spinal tap(intrathecally).Treating patients with weakened immune systems is not as successful, but it is improving.Radiation therapy used to be the main treatment for primary lymphoma of the brain. Now it is usually reserved for treating patients who do not respond to chemotherapy.Treatment with multiple therapies (combination therapy) is common.Expectations (prognosis)The survival of untreated primary brain lymphoma is under 2 months. Treated with chemotherapy, patients often survive 3 - 4 years or more. About 40% of patients are alive at 5 years. In general, older patients have a worse outlook than younger patients.ComplicationsPossible complications include:Chemotherapy side effects, including low blood countsRadiation side effects, including confusion, headaches, nervous system (neurologic) problems, and tissue deathReturn (recurrence) of the lymphomaReferencesDeAngelis LM. Information on spinal tap chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy treatments vary just like cancers vary and people vary. But I'll tell you what it was like for my teenage son to receive chemo through his spine: A lumbar puncture (LP) was performed several times during his months of chemotherapy. Each LP consisted of draining spinal fluid to test for the presence of cancer cells (he had lymphoma) and to administer chemotherapy directly into his spine. Before the procedure, he was given drugs to sedate him and to help him forget the procedure. Nurses held my son's knees up while he laid on his side while the doctor was performing the LP. The procedure itself never lasted very long (less than 15 minutes). Afterwards, my son usually slept and sometimes had a headache.

What is Widespread bone metastases from prostate cancer?

This is where the cancer has spread to the bones, resulting in a great deal of pain in most cases. This is usually Stage 5. Death is not far off at this point. With chemotherapy, the person may get 18 to 24 more months of life. Without chemo, an 8 to 9 month life expectancy is all that is left.

How long will a patient live when the cancer has spread to the bone?

If the patient opts for chemotherapy, they might live for 18 to 24 months. With no chemo, 8 or 9 months. Everyone is different, but this is the average.
