Yes, it will free up HD space if you have a large map and you traveled a lot. Some world saves can be quite large.
If you have a Mac then right click on the world and select "Get Info" to find the size of the file, if you have Windows then right click and select Properties.
If you can't afford an external HD for storage then you can alway buy like a 16gig USB flash drive to save the worlds if you don't want to delete it and use it again later. The flash drives have come down in price a lot.
