Benzene, an industrial chemical, is a carcinogen. It is not an ingredient in any carbonated beverage.
However when sodium benzoate is combined with ascorbic acid or citric acid it can break down into benzene.
Coca cola has removed certain drinks from the market, but there are still studies that show many coke products contain benzene, such as Sprite and Dr Pepper.
So what you should worry about is sodium benzoate, which is what can turn into benzene.

∙ 11y agoDiet Pepsi may contain benzene depending on whether or not it has been exposed to intense light or heated above room temperature for a period of time. The two ingredients sodium (or potassium) benzoate and ascorbic acid (or citric acid to a lesser extent) will react to form free benzene under those conditions. Potassium EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate) has been added to DIET soft drinks to inhibit the reaction. Pepsi and Coke have not added it to their diet beverages as of early 2013. EDTA is harmless and is, in fact, used to chelate and thus deactivate harmful substances in the medical treatment of poisonings. Sugar in regular (non-diet) beverages also inhibits the reaction.
