Whether a device requires a 3-prong power cord depends on its design and electrical requirements. The wattage alone does not determine this. However, devices that consume more than 1000 watts typically require a 3-prong power cord for safety reasons. For devices with lower wattage, it is best to consult the manufacturer's specifications or the device's user manual to determine the necessary power cord.
The cord grip holds the power cord of the appliance firmly to the plug body. If this is loose or absent then the cord is reliant on the electrical terminals to hold it in place. The copper wire terminals are weak and can easily break. In the UK the 'Earth' wire, which protects the user from electric shock, is the last wire to fail if the power cord is accidentally tripped over.

USB cables can carry both data and power. If the device attached by the USB cord is drawing a lot of power this could possibly cause your cord to heat up, especially if there were a fault in the cord itself. The best way to test the cord is to simply replace it with another cord you think is good and see if it heats up also.

An electric knife looks like a large serrated knife. It has a larger handle than a normal knife because that's where the motor is housed. You can find electric knives that have a cord attached, and plug into an outlet. Or you can find electric knives that charge on a base, so you can take them off and use it with no cord attached.
