The GM vehicles use the DexCool anti-freeze. There is a replacement type of antifreeze that can be used in GM vehicles but you cannot mix them with the DexCool. To change to another type of antifreeze the cooling system should be completely flushed of the old coolant. I would advise keeping the same coolant as the manufacturer provides

Water is coolant!!! Pre mixed coolant comes with anti freeze and sometimes a rust inhibitor, other than that it does same job. Common sense being your guide. Do not use straight water during the winter. Varying ratios of water mixed to antifreeze will actually increase the boiling point in both winter and summer and is more benficial in summer in terms of cooling function. More Coolant/antifreeze less water (mixed) increases boiling point correspondingly. It is of greater benfit to use coolant/antifreeze in your engine because it prevents rust and corrosion in the various parts of cooling system and heating system (heater) and increases the boiling point. Check the coolant/antifreeze container for instructions on mixtures and learn from it.

UNFORTUNATELY, I have a 2001 Malibu and have had gaskets replaced three times now (intake and head) to fix coolant leaks. My sister and mom both have the same engine in their cars and have similar problems. Apparently this engine is prone to coolant leaks (which are pricey to repair).

"Engine coolant" can mean water or anti-freeze, whichever circulates through the engine to draw heat from the block, through the radiator where it is cooled by the fan and then recirculated. Anti-freeze (ethylene glycol, which is sweet-tasting and often fatally ingested by pets and children) is preferred over water because it doesn't promote rust and is a more effective coolant. There are numerous types of coolant/antifreeze on the market and NO they are not all the same. Though many contain ethylene or proplyene glycol the corrosion and rust inhibitors vary greatly from type to type. For example Dexcool (orange) is an HOAT coolant and should not be used in ford motor vehicles. You should follow the manufacturers instructions and use the correct coolant. No matter what some companies say i.e. prestone, there is no such thing as "any make, any model, any color" coolant.
