No only a small percentage of people encounter a bedbug problem in their bed, probably less than 1 in 40. But do not get confused with dust-mites as they are a different creature and they do live in almost every bed in the world. But you ask about "bedbugs" so can I explain the facts about them. People as such do not have bedbugs, beds do. Or to be more specific bedbugs live in or near people's beds and they will feed off whoever happens to be using that bed. In a hotel a bed may be infested and different people book into that hotel on different nights and use that bed and so get bitten while staying there, but not once they leave that hotel and go back to their home, unless they take bedbug eggs in their luggage with them, in which case they will have a bedbug problem in their home thereafter. But bedbugs may also decide to move from one person's bed to another person's bed for their meals in one home, as they are attracted towards the breath of somebody asleep. So in such a place as a dormitory or barrack room with several people sleeping in very close proximity, different peoplemay get bitten on different nights. Also in some cases some bedbugs in a home infested with them may move to a neighbouring home where they detect the breath of people asleep in that home and then set up their base near to a bed in there. Thus a person whose bed has never been infested, living in that home, will suddenly have acquired a bed bug problem through no fault of his own and in time other people's beds in that new home may also get infested and the user of that bed get bitten.

NO. People do not "get bedbugs" beds do. So if a bed has a bedbug problem whoever sleeps in that bed could get bitten during the night. An infested bed may sometimes be used by different people on different nights, such as a bed in a hotel room which five different people rent on five different nights of a week. On each night whoever sleeps in that room may thus be bitten during the night he or she stays at that hotel. Usually that person will no longer have a bedbug problem after he or she checks out of the hotel in the morning unless that person may be unlucky enough to take one or more bedbug eggs with them in their clothes or luggage when they return home and then this could mean that person brings the bedbug problem to one or more beds in his or her own home if the eggs hatch there. When a bedbug egg hatches and a bedbug nymph is born, it can detect the breath of anybody asleep within about 50 metres of where it hatches, so it will immediately want to find the source of that breath and then climb into the bed where that person is asleep and sip their blood. After completing its blood meal on that perspn's limb or body. the bedbug will then find a new hiding place as close as practicable to where the person sleeps. It can then come out again and have further human blood meals on future nights off anybody alseep in that bed or in a nearby bed.

If you have bedbugs in your home you can spread an infestation , either intentionally or unintentionally, in various ways. But the commonest is to give them something to take to their home which has bedbug eggs laid in it. This could be a bed, a mattress, furniture such as a chest of drawers, luggage, wardrobe or an armchair or bedside table or anything else.

Once the eggs hatch, the newly born nymph bedbugs will detect the CO2 breathed out by anybody asleep in that home and then crawl to that bed and climb on to the person's body for first blood meal and then make its first home in or near that bed and continue to feed off whoever sleeps in that bed on subsequent nights. After going through five moults and five feeds it will have become an adult bedbug and then the infestation will increase faster as they multiply at a phenomenal rate once established in a bed.

If there are many eggs in whatever you passed to the person, once the females have become adult bedbugs they too will start laying a dozen or more eggs every night after feeding, laying their eggs on hard surfaces somewhere in or near that person's bed.

So the victim's bed will very soon be very heavily infested and he or she is likely to have bite marks all over the body and be very itchy so is unlikely to thank you for the gift if he or she discovers how the infestation started.

Do bedbugs eat anybody's blood?

Yes, bedbugs apparently feed on anybody. Clean people are just as likely to be a bedbug's meal as are filthy people. But people are different as to how they react to being bitten by bedbugs. Some show virtually no marks where bedbugs have fed off them, many come out in little red marks resembling mosquito bites but usually in lines of three, while others come out in very large ugly looking rashes or lacerations over large areas of their skin, usually on their back or limbs.
