The best way to test the effect of genetic versus environment is to conduct studies in identical twins because one can never hold environment perfectly constant, but identical twins are perfect genetic matches. Studies show that behavioral traits like sexual preference, depression, schizophrenia and other cognitive and behavioral disorders and even preferences are mostly shaped by environment, and have a very minor genetic component.
The environment.
On my Science homework was the question What controls Inherited Traits? After reading through my text book I discovered that Inherited traits are controlled by genes. So, the answer to the questtion is genes!
High unlikely. Personality is a complex trait which is probably a combination of genes (carried on more than just the X chromosome) and environment. What no one is certain of is the relative effect of each one. So, are genes more important in determining your personality than your environment (eg. your upbringing)? We don't know.
All inherited traits are a product of the organism's genes.
Traits that are produced by the interaction of several genes are called polygenic traits. Examples of polygenic traits are height and skin color.
Both what is in your genes and the environment produce various personality traits.
The traits of an organism are controlled by genes and environment. Genes
Genes are the term for groups of genetic code, as DNA, that define inherited traits. Genes control all of your physical traits, such as height, eye color, hair color, predisposition for diseases such as diabetes, and, it is believed, predispositions for behavior as well. They are literally the coding for who you are, both physically, and in some part personality wise. however, your personality is also greatly affected by environment. In a nutshell: genes are the instructions to your cells for your physical traits and the predisposition to certain personality traits.
Upbringing, if parental care is meant, influences personality little, but other things, like overall happiness, are important products of parental care. The environment, especially the unique environment, is as important as the genes in all human traits. It is not a dichotomy and it is nature via nurture. What we measure is the squared variance from the mean, the differences in influence. We do not measure and can not measure the positive weight of either genes or environment influencing people.

Animals can get their traits from their parents or from their environment.

Genes are the sections of DNA that code for a functional product, such as a protein. They interact with an organism's environment to produce traits.
Research suggests that personality traits are more strongly influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, rather than solely one or the other. Both genes and environmental experiences such as upbringing, culture, and life events play a significant role in shaping our personality.
Genetic traits are formed by both genes and the environment. For example, genes and environmental factors such as exposure to cigarette smoke can both influence aging.
