No. Heartworm comes from mosquito bites; I am not exactly sure how right now but it is not contagious. To prevent your dog from getting heartworm you can go to the vet. They will prescribe some medication for it.

2nd Answer:

Yes the heartworm microfilare (baby heartworms) are carried by mosquitos. The mosquito that is carrying the heartworm larvae bite the dog to ingest their meal of blood and when they do that they pass on the heartworm into the dog's blood. So it can be transferred from dog to dog by the Mosquito. So if you have a positive heartworm dog, the chances of nearby dogs getting the heartworm are greatly increased and the mosquito is the carrier. Have your dog tested by your Veterinarian to be sure he or she is negative for heartworm then put your dog on a once a month Heartworm Preventative year around, not just in the summer time but year around.

No, heartworms are not contagious, so animals can be housed with a heartworm positive dog. However, housing dogs with other dogs that have heartworms increases the risk of infection for the uninfected dogs because the infected dog can be fed on by a mosquito that then feeds on the uninfected dog. People can not catch heartworms from a dog or cat.

Yes, they do hurt a dog. Heartworms can cause poor blood circulation, resulting in damage to the dog's heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. Heartworms can be fatal (they can kill the dog).

Does heartgard kill heartworms already inside dogs?

Heartgard only kills the microfillare, the immature stage of heartworms (or baby heartworms). It will not kill the adult heartworms that live in the heart. That is why it is very important to have your dog tested first by a Veterinarian for heartworms.

Can a dog get heartworm from drinking water with mosquito larvae?

No. Heartworms come from adult mosquitoes through the BITE. Baby heartworms are injected with the mosquito bite and migrate to the heart through the blood system. So, while ingesting water with mosquito larvae in it will not give your dog heartworms, if they are allowed to grow up into adult mosquitoes, the adults may bite your dog and give it heartworms.

Do heartworms eat muscle?

No, heartworms gather nutrients from the blood streaming by them. In fact, heartworms don't actually live in the heart of dogs - they live in the large pulmonary arteries in the lungs but swim into the heart after the dog dies.

Can a dog have heartworms and another type of worm at the same time?

I'm not certain but I think the only way a dog can get heartworm is by being bitten by an infected mosquito. So the answer to your question is no but it is still wise to give your dog worming tablets which include heartworm such as advanticks. Hope this helped :D
