Helio began as a joint venture between Earthlink and SK Telecom. Earthlink has divested itself from the partnership and it is now owned and operated by SK Telecom. (The previous answer here indicated that Sprint owned 1/3 of Helio, which is incorrect).
Helio is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that uses the Sprint Network.
You cannot activate Helio phones with Sprint directly.
One carrier that leases the Sprint tower network is Helio. In the United States Virgin Mobile also accesses the Sprint network. These are currently the two cellular providers piggy back ridding off of Sprint Nextel.
The answer is Yes and No. The phones use CDMA technology (as opposed to AT&T and T-Mobile which use GSM), so in THEORY you would be able to activate a Helio device on the Verizon Network. All Helio devices natively use the Sprint Network for primary transit, and will resort to using Verizon's network when roaming. So, for your bottom line answer: No. You cannot use a Helio device with Verizon Wireless... (Yet. Hopefully that will change soon.)
