Yes, it might be slightly painful to a dog to give him shots. But probably not as painful as the disease that the shot prevents or treats. Many dog owners give their dogs medication by injection, just as humans with Diabetes are trained to inject themselves with insulin.

Injections by untrained or uncautious individuals can severely injure a dog, so only adults should normally administer such medications.

The dog will have some discomfort but she will be given painkillers after the surgery to help ease the uncomfortable feeling. Spaying is not an easy surgery and as with all surgical procedures there is a risk from being anaethetised. However if your dog is healthy then there should be no reason why the operation will not be a success.

There are many benefits to having your dog spayed, firstly the obvious - no unwanted puppies. Secondly it will mean that you dog is less likely to get mammary tumours later in life and as there is no longer a uterus it is impossible for her to get uterine or ovarian tumours. Plus she cannot get a pyometra (pus accumulation within the uterus - can be common in older, entire female dogs and is life-threatening). Overall it is highly recommended that all animals that will not be used for breeding (male or female) should get neutered. See your vet for more advice or information.
