It all depends on what disapline you ride. Like I rode American Saddlebreds, and they are show horses so their tails needed to be long. If it wasnt there own tail many people would buy tail extensions. But after the show was done we would braid their tails with a bunch of conditioner, put it in a sock cut into two parts at the top then wrapped in vet wrap that way it keeps their tails clean and growing and nice for the next show. But most horses dont need long tails like those show horses do.
