Most cases of lupus are mild to moderate. If the patient follows the treatment plan, a normal life expectancy can be attained. Fewer cases are life threatening and some are fatal. Strides in diagnosis and treatment over the last 40 years have changed a diagnosis of lupus from a death sentence to a life sentence. Lupus patients are more susceptible to infection and cardiovascular events than the general population.

What happens to the inside of the body when a person has lupus?

Systemic lupus erythematosus affects each patient differently. Lupus is always marked by inflammation which is the result of autoimmune activity. The majority of people with lupus have joint and muscle pain along with profound fatigue. Half of them have lupus kidney disease. The chronic inflammation greatly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. The three leading causes of death in lupus are uncontrolled infection, kidney failure and heart attacks/strokes. Lupus can affect any other organ in the body.

Can people with lupus work?

I have lupus and what many would call the most severe side effect causing my kidneys to be involved. I live a very normal life. The only exceptions to this are that I have many doctors appointments and blood work scheduled throughout my month. I also get into bed around 7:00 pm and am asleep by 9:00 pm to wake at 6:30.

What is the most common causes of death with lupus?

I found one study that said 30 years younger than the average national age of death. That didn't help much so I kept searching, finding this: Go to http://diglib.tums.ac.ir/pub/magmng/pdf/1041.pdf This one says the average age at death is 26. 30 years ago, lupus was considered a death sentence and patients were not expected to survive longer than 5 years after diagnosis. Today, the majority of lupus patients can expect to live a relatively normal life span provided they follow their treatment plan and adopt a healthy lifestyle. (I am 57 and have SLE with major organ involvement and I am sitting here writing.) There are no solid mortality statistics on lupus. The reason for this is that lupus is very rarely listed as the direcct cause of death. 40% of lupus patients will develop lupus nephitis which can kill. The cause of death is listed as kidney failure not lupus. Lupus patients are twice as likely to develop atheroscleroisis or hardening of the arteries and to suffer cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks. The cause of death is listed as stroke or heart attack and not lupus. Lupus patients have great difficulty battling infection because of a confused immune system and the immunosuppressive medications they take to manage the disease. If a lupus patient dies of pneumonia, that is listed as the cause of death and not lupus. In addition, the medications taken to manage lupus have side effects that can lead to complications which lead to death. I have lupus and work with lupus patients on a daily basis. From personal experience with many, many patients I can say that the average age of death is most certainly not 26!

Do patients recover from lupus?

The vast majority of people with lupus live a relatively normal life span. People with lupus die of "lupus related complications", the top 3 being organ failure, heart attacks and strokes, and uncontrolled infection. Lupus is not listed as the cause of death, but the complication is.

Are aids and lupus the same?

AIDS is acquired immune deficiency. It is caused by a virus. The result is a very weak immune system that is unable to defend against pathogens. Lupus is an autoimmune disease. It is not contagious in any way. The result is an over active and confused immune system that attacks healthy parts of the self.
