Miracle fruit is the berry of the plant Synsepalum dulcificum which makes sour foods taste sweet. At certain parties, people take miracle fruit and then ingest typically unappetizing foods, ranging from limes to hot sauce. This practice is referred to as "taste tripping". The fruit (and tablets made from the fruit) are available online from several vendors. Local gardens sometimes also sell S. dulcificum plants.
Yes, I've tried some it works with bitter and sour stuff. But, it has no effect on stuff like bread and salad.
There are many places to purchase miracle fruit on the internet. I have opted for using the miracle fruit tabs and ordered mine through the website http://www.buy-miracle-fruit.com They are based in the USA, so if you are not based in the USA I would suggest trying another site like miracle fruit world from the UK. The tabs were very good and indeed produced the effect of flavor reversal.
Miracle Fruit
I have never heard any ill reports from anyone consuming miracle fruit, miracle fruit tabs, miracle berries or the like. There was an experiment done where guinea pigs were fed high concentrations of the active ingredient (which is a glycoprotein) with no ill effects. It is believed the protein is broken up in the stomach and only acts on the tongue. Of course, the only bad effect is if you eat too many lemons your mouth will hurt :)
The scientific name would be Synsepalum dulcificum.
The plant was discovered in the 1800s, but there is no way to know if it existed so long ago since there is no evidence of any fossils or written information (obviously). Will G miracle fruit express . com
