The earth and the sun have not been moving closer. The distance from the earth to the sun remains, on average, constant. The only difference is, every year, the sun is closest to the earth during the Northern Hemisphere winter! Yes, January 3! This is called perihelion, when the earth is 147,000 km from the sun.
During the past few decades (a decade is ten years), the earth's temperature has been rising, more rapidly than ever. This has led scientists to conclude that the sun's distance is notcausing or affecting global warming.
It is the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from the the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and deforestation (cutting down trees which previously removed carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere), that is responsible for global warming.

Many building close together tend to be warmer than settlements that are spread out. But a compact town can pool its resources and cause few emissions that way.
