No, you do not take two pain medications together. You need to separate them by 4-6 hours, and the naproxen can only be taken every 12 hours. Overdosing on these pain meciation can cause liver damage, stomach ulcers, grogginess, and confusion. You need to consult your doctor if your pain medication is not working well enough.

They are both commonly used together in various pain medications, so yes, you can. The only time it's counter-productive is if you're using one or the other primarily for reducing inflammation. It's not that you can't or shouldn't take them together, it's just harder on the stomach if you do, and you can only get so much reduction in inflammation to begin with. Naproxen takes a little longer to work and it must be sustained, but it tends to work better and longer than Tylenol does.

For example, Percocet is a combination of Oxycodone and Tylenol (Acetaminophen), and is commonly used as an acute pain medication and for breakthrough pain in chronic pain patients like myself.

Naproxen (the generic name for Naprosyn) is an Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) commonly used for reducing inflammation in the area causing the pain you're using the Percocet for. It typically comes in 500mg doses, and should always be taken with plenty of water. Since it commonly also causes constipation, taking it with a fiber pill or something else helps also. For myself, I use chocolate pudding or ice cream....

Naproxen is also the primary drug component of the OTC medicine Aleve, only in non-prescription dosages (220mg). Since it's buffered, it's a bit easier on the stomach. You can get the full prescription dose if you run out of Naproxen by taking 2 Aleve pills.

I take Tylenol for my headaches so I suggest Tylenol I live in Canada and the best one we have (works great for pain of any sort) is Advil. It may be under a different name in the States, but if you mention Advil your pharmacist will know which one you are talking about.

For some patients, naproxen sodium can be a helpful headache treatment. Taking it too frequently can cause a disorder called Medication Overuse Headache or rebound however. Sometimes, patients may have other health conditions that would make taking naproxen dangerous. For a diagnosis and appropriate treatment, a doctor needs to be consulted. Preferably a headache specialist who is best able to diagnose, treat and manage headache disorders.
