An isthmus (English pronunciation: /ˈɪsθməs/ or /ˈɪsməs/; plural: isthmuses, isthmi, from Ancient Greek: ἰσθμός, isthmos, neck) is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas. Of note, the Isthmus of Panama connects the continents of North and South America (the Americas), and the Isthmus of Suez in Egypt connects Africa and Asia (or Eurasia).

Panama is a thin piece of land that unites two continents, therefore it is bathed by two oceans, the Caribbean and the Pacific thus fitting the description of isthmus is very accurate.. The isthmus of Panama evolved from volcanic eruption millions of years ago thus creating the isthmus. Before that there was no divide between these 2 bodies of water.

The country of Panama is not a canal, but it is an isthmus (thin piece of land connecting two larger pieces of land) between Central and South America. However, since it is the narrowest piece of land in the Americas, there is a canal in the country, allowing passage between Atlantic and Pacific Oceans without having to go around Tierra del Fuego.
