I've been told that if you leave a small balance on your credit card it'll count towards your credit rating due to the fact the credit bureaus want you to pay off the money they lent you but also want to make money on top of that. I know this is a good way to appeal to a lender when applying for a loan. But if there is a way to avoid deliberately paying interest I'd rather pay it in full if I can afford to and still have it qualify as a credit rating.
You do not want to waste you time paying less than the minimum on your credit card. Paying less than the minimum is like paying the bill late. It won't count. For example, if they ask for a minimum payment of $10 and you pay only $9 the credit card company will bill you a late charge then your finance charges will go up by the following month! This will cause you unnecessary problems. Avoid this by always paying the minimum at least. Do not waste your time paying a bill if it's not the right amount. Pay at least the minimum amount. Always! If the credit card asks you for a minimum payment of $10 and you only pay $9.99 , the payment will not count. You will create problems for yourself! What happens is they will add a late charge to your card. It's like not paying at all. Also, they can add higher finance charges! avoid this for yourself.

Using a credit card sensibly - is a good way to improve an individuals status. Making payments on time - proves you can be trusted to use a credit facility sensibly. Clearing any outstanding balance quickly, also improves your rating. Conversely, 'light' usage of the card, late payments and 'topping up' your balance to its limit all count against you.
It depends on how good your credit is and how good your payment history with them specifically is. Basically, you can count on any credit card charging you the most they can legally get away with, unless you're such a stellar customer (pushing a lot of money through the system and always paying on or ahead of time) that they're willing to offer you a lower rate.
