No, marigolds don't help keep squirrels from eating your tomatoes. The first tomatoes to be eaten by the squirrels were in patio pots and surrounded by marigolds almost half as tall as the tomatoes. One tomato is now completely bare of tomatoes, it had 5 or 6 before the squirrels found it. The other still has 5 but by tomorrow probably will have only one or two left - if any.

How do you keep squirrels away?

Squirrel feeders are one option for keeping squirrels away from bird feeders and other parts of the property.Specifically, squirrels really love nuts, especially those of the black walnut tree (Juglans nigra). It is possible to set up a feeder or feeding corner with a squirrel mix that is store-bought or homemade. Otherwise, it is difficult to keep squirrels away from a feeder or area of the property that has gotten their attention.

How long can crushed tomatoes be left out of the fridge and still be okay?

Foods that are left out in room temperature for more than an hour can begin bacteria growth. Our stomach acids can kill some of these bacterias but not all and some can make you very sick. Keep foods OUT of the danger zone- Above 45 degrees and Below 145 degrees. Between these temperatures bacteria lives and breeds on our foods.

How to Get the Most from Your Backyard Tomatoes?

Tomatoes lend themselves to a lot of useful dishes and storage treatments. Here are a few options you should consider. How to Store and Use TomatoesTomatoes stop ripening once refrigerated. If you're trying to get an additional few days of life out of a really ripe tomato, keeping it in the fridge is a good idea. If you're trying to get a pink tomato to turn red, you'll be out of luck once it's refrigerated. Even worse, taking a pink tomato out of the refrigerator to ripen it a little more won't work either. Once chilled, a tomato stops ripening forever.Tomatoes ripen better in a paper bag. Most vegetables and many fruits release ethylene gas, which speeds up ripening. The more veggies you keep together in an enclosed space, the faster they'll ripen (or rot). Keeping three tomatoes in a bag together, though, isn't quite as effective as using a big ethylene gas producer to boost ripening speed. The best ripening friends are apples or bananas. If you have a tomato or even an avocado you want to ripen quickly, pair it with a banana or apple in a bag and you'll see quick results.Plucking tomatoes from their stems may not be the best way to harvest them. A bare stem end has small openings that allow moisture to escape and bacteria to enter. To help keep your harvested tomatoes fresher longer, leave a small portion of stem attached. If this is impossible (if you're buying produce stand tomatoes), store tomatoes upside down once you get them home to reduce the amount of air coming in contact with the stem end of the fruit.Canning or freezing is the way to go. If you have an ample tomato harvest, you can use any of a number of recipes, from stewing to making marinara sauce, to make the best use of your fresh tomatoes. For long term storage, though, be sure to label and freeze your recipes quickly or process them with a pressure canner. The USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) recommends pressure canning as the only reliable home canning method because it generates the heat necessary to kill bacteria for safe, long term, non-refrigerated storage.Drying is another useful tomato storage method.Sun dried tomatoes are very easy to make using either a dehydrator or conventional oven. You don't actually have to leave them out in the sun (unless you want to). Although the process is also pretty safe and simple, not all tomatoes dry well. Meatier tomatoes like Roma tomatoes, also known as plum tomatoes, are the best choice because they have a high flesh to juice ratio. Drying tomatoes generally takes 30 to 48 hours, and the resulting tomato chips can be used over the winter in soups and stews. Dried tomato slices or chips can also be ground into a very tasty seasoning powder.Assess your green tomatoes. Green tomatoes are great fried, but only if they're a light, clear green in color. Slightly green tomatoes can also be artificially ripened in a bag as outlined above. If the tomatoes are very green, though (we're talking almost leaf green), they probably won't ripen or ever be fit for consumption. Another thing you should keep in mind is that you can ripen green tomatoes picked before the first frost, but if temperatures drop to below 39 degrees F in the garden, any fruit left outdoors will behave as though it's been refrigerated and stop ripening whether it's slightly green or almost red.In the U.S., tomatoes are the most popular vegetables grown in backyard gardens. Whether you grow super sweet grape tomatoes, dainty cherry tomatoes, or prefer the big boys, beefsteaks or brandywines, harvest time is always a little bittersweet. It's the end of another season, and spring planting is months away. While your tomatoes are still sun kissed and juicy, make a few BLTs; slice them in salads, or stuff them with tuna, salmon, shrimp or crab. Nothing tastes quite like a homegrown tomato, so enjoy the fruits of your labor. You deserve it.[video=]
