Last night after consuming a large piece of lemon/poppy seed cake, I developed one of the worst headaches ever. It came on about an hour after ingesting it. Because of the speed and severity of the headache, I thought I was having a stroke. Even after taking three extra-strength Tylenol tablets, the headache lasted for hours. That is the only thing I can attribute the pain to. What an awful night. No more poppy seeds for me.

∙ 14y agoWhile poppy seeds do contain a small amount of opiate, it is not enough to have any significant medical effects, unless you have a poppy allergy (and people can develop Allergies to nearly anything). Normally, it is quite safe to eat poppy seeds.

Absolutely. I have had the same experience. I know that even smelling poppy flower causes me to have a massive headache. It is much worse if I consume poppy seeds and it does not respond to pain killers. Best to avoid altogether.
