Pressure is defined as the derivative of normal force with respect to surface area. Pressure is proportional to the normal force, and inversely proportional to the surface area. As the normal force over a surface area varies so does pressure.

In the case that pressure is increasing then either the normal force is increasing, the surface area of which the normal force is being exerted is decreasing, or the combination of both of these is occurring.
