Any warm blooded mammal can get rabies and also pass it on through their salvia to the next mammal. The salvia from the affected mammal would have to get into something like an open wound, in your mouth, in your nose or eyes, etc. That is why it is so important to vaccinate our pets against Rabies.

In a broad sense, yes, humans and animals will react to being infected with rabies the same way. However, the clinical signs shown will vary between individual humans and animals. There are two general sets of clinical signs of rabies: mad rabies and dumb rabies. Mad rabies is the form most people have heard about and is the more common form shown by dogs: aggression, lack of fear or inhibition, foaming at the mouth, etc. Dumb rabies is not as well publicized but is the more common form shown by cattle: insensitivity to normal stimuli (won't flinch when touched, doesn't react to light/dark, etc.) and generalized sedation in actions.

Both forms generally kill the animal or human within a couple of weeks of starting to show clinical signs.

Can stray cats have rabies?

YES! There are very few animals that are not carriers of rabies. Raccoon's skunks, cats and dogs are all vectors for the rabies virus. Rabies can be passed from animal to animal through saliva, feces, and flesh wounds. People can also get rabies the same way. Animals often only live a few weeks at most when the contract rabies, so keep your distance from the stray cats until you are sure you have allowed a few weeks time to make sure they don't before interaction, quarantine works best during these few weeks.

How did Louis Pasteur invent the rabies vaccine?

Louis Pasteur used the common sense for the vaccine production. He infected the rabbits with rabies virus. When the rabbit developed the rabies and died of rabies. He removed the brains of rabbits and dried them, for about ten day, after making small pieces of the same. This way he attenuated the rabies virus. Form this tissue he made the rabies vaccine. This was very crude vaccine and protection rate was about 60 % only. 18 people died of rabies, due to rabies vaccine in initial days of rabies vaccine production.

How are dogs effected from rabies?

Any animal with rabies will die. There is no treatment or cure. There is no way to test a live animal for rabies. Rabies is an extremely contagious and dangerous virus that will also kill people-if you suspect an animal is rabid,do not handle it. Call your local animal control to come and get it. Rabies has a wide range of symptoms-from extreme aggression to near catatonia. Make sure your dog is vaccinated and you will not have to worry.
