Radioactivity, or nuclear radiation, is caused by the emission of particles or energy (e.g. gamma rays) from an unstable atomic nucleus. Radioactive atomss are undergoing "decay" in which the nucleus changes from one element to another. They do not all change at once, but rather a few at a time, with a consistent time called the "half-life" indicating how rapidly the atoms will all have undergone transmutation. The shorter the half-life, the more unstable the nuclei are.

Radioactive decay happens within the nucleus of the atom, and the decay changes the nucleus. When this happens, new chemical elements are formed from the original atoms.

The Rutherford gold foiled experiment showed the presence of a large nucleus in the atom. When electrons fired at the gold foil were deflected, it indicated that a large mass was present.

What is Radioactivity and artificial transmutations?

Radio Activity- The process in which an unstable atomic nucleus emits charged particles and energy Artificial Transmutations- The conversion of atoms of one element to atoms of another.

Do chemical reactions result in the nuclei of the atoms involved?

No, chemical reactions result only in the electrons of the atoms being involved. Only radioactivity results n nuclei of atoms being involved.

Do radioactivity nuclear reaction half life fission and fusion all connect?

Yes, they can all be connected. These disparate events are all nuclear events. They involve changes in the nuclei of atoms, and that's what connects them. Radioactivity is the "breakdown" of an unstable atomic nucleus. Nuclear reactions come in different types, but they are all nuclear reactions involving nuclei. Half-life is the term applied to unstable radionuclides to speak to how quickly the nucleus of the different ones will decay. Fission is basically the splitting of an atomic nucleus, while fusion is the fusion of subatomic particles into a new atomic nucleus, or the fusion of atomic nuclei to make a heavier atomic nucleus.

What makes a nucleus radioactive?

If you are referring to a cell's nucleus than the simple answer is that's not radioactive. Radioactivity occurs when elemental atoms become unstable due to the loss or gain of additional neutrons; these unstable atoms are referred to as radioactive isotopes. If a cell's nucleus were radioactive it would not last very long, its structure and function would quickly degrade and collapse.

Are radio active elements self substaining?

It depends on what you mean. If you mean, are they able to sustain radioactivity by themselves forever then, no. The radioactivity is a result of the breakdown of atoms in these elements into other atoms, fragments of atoms and various forms of energy. So when the supply of atoms capable of breaking down eliminates itself the radioactivity ceases.

Why natural radioactivity is a nuclear property?

All radioactivity whether natural or induced through man made activities is a nuclear process, because it involves changes in the nuclei of the atoms of the active material. This is true of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation.
