Does science claim that ghosts exist?

Although there is an enormous amount of anecdotal evidence in the form of people who claim to have seen ghosts, and to have spoken to ghosts, to have been haunted by ghosts etc., there isn't any solid scientific evidence that ghosts exist. Most scientists would consider that the idea of ghosts is not plausible because there is no apparent mechanism that would produce them. No matter how closely the human body and its various functions have been examined, no scientist has yet detected ectoplasm or any other spiritual essence. This does not in itself prove that no such material will ever be discovered, but until it is, there is little scientific reason to believe in ghosts.
