The word simony arose from the alleged attempt (Acts chapter 8) of Simon Magus to buy the secret of performing miracles. Simony is either (i) the purchase of sacraments or privileges or (ii) the purchase of an ecclesiastical office from a Church.
Neither case was likely to have resulted in a reduction of money to the Church. The purchase of sacraments not earned was an expense to whoever was foolish enough to offer to buy them. In fact, the Catholic Church's sale of Indulgences was a hugely profitable form of simony. Positions in the Church, particularly bishop or above, guaranteed the holder great power and prestige and even the ability to engage in the lucrative business of selling sacraments, privileges and subordinate offices - thus a position in the Church hierarchy was a valuable asset that could be bought and sold.
The church opposed the practice of simony because it was seen as a corruption of sacred practices by buying or selling spiritual goods or positions within the church. This practice undermined the spiritual integrity of the clergy and compromised the church's moral authority. The church viewed simony as a sin and worked to eradicate it to uphold its moral principles.
as of 2013 All Orthodox churches teach that gay people are sinners, and most will not allow gay people as members unless they are celibate.

Many didn't allow other religions to practice. That is one of the fallacies that is written about the reason for establishing the colonies. To be able to vote the requirements were that they had to be a male over 21, own land, and be a member of the church. Church membership was very low in the colonies and very few went to church. The population of Boston had 60% of the eligible males not attending a church. Our founding colonial people were too busy to go to church.
