Yes, they can do so quite easily, especially when they know what their condition is and what problems it may cause, as well as how they can best overcome those problems.

Some with severe cases of Asperger's Syndrome cannot function in normal society.

Some Aspies do not look to be "normal". If you ask them to act normal they might walk off on you or internally cringe and think you a fool for asking them to be stupid. They are highly intelligent and from their perspective we are the ones that are not normal. Being very logical people they look at us and wonder why we think THEY are less than intelligent. They are usually very soft hearted and do not like to hurt us with their answers so they stay quiet, the smart thing if you ask me. But if you insist on converting them to the "norm" then by all means you can try by having them look at expressions of people's faces and teaching them how to determine which is which. Then have them practice it in the mirror. Point out people and have them study reactions. They are brilliant learners and should catch on fast if they are helped.

Addition by an Aspie: This depends on the individual person with Aspergers.

We often learn social cues in adulthood, while other people knew them in their teenage years.

Sometimes we appear weird. Others of us study social skills and learn to blend in very effectively. Some of us become really good at it. However, most of us still feel like we never really fit in. The important thing for an Aspie is to find one good friend who accepts you...I was lucky to find that friend.

Society is a large term and Aspergers is not one of those things where a lot of people know about.

Those who are aware or know when someone does have Aspergers can at least understand a little more and know how to interact with them.

Those who don't know may treat Aspergers people the same as others and might not easily understand why the Aspergers person is so much more different.

The answer would have to be a maybe, because all people are different, and Aspergers is another one of those differences.

Define 'normal' - functioning normally looks different to everyone. An Autistic person can function just like a neurotypical person, but it depends on their symptoms and severity.
