Ashfur seems to have directed his hate to Squirrelflight. It can be assumed he believes that Squirrelflight, opting to choose Brambleclaw over Ashfur, was the one who was at fault. Maybe he thought Brambleclaw was an innocent bystander or something. If he did feel any hatred toward him, it's possible he simply chose to hate Squirrelflight instead, because he still loves her. Love hate situation.

Even though Hollyleaf felt like Squirrelflight was a traitor, a filthy liar, she knew that this secret could not be revealed. So before the Gathering began, Firestar the ThunderClan leader, called his cats together to travel to the Gathering. "Where's Ashfur? And Squirrelflight? I don't see them." Squirrelflight was found, but Ashfur was missing. They looked and found Thornclaw bent over a limp cat's body. Thornclaw stared at Firestar. "It's Ashfur!" He cried. Everyone sat vigil for Ashfur that night, though Lionblaze and Jayfeather felt a bit relieved that their secret would remain hidden. Firestar declared that even though Ashfur was found near the WindClan border, there was no scent of a WindClan cat on him. He declared that a cat from ThunderClan, or maybe a loner had killed him. But deep in Hollyleaf's heart, she knew she had killed him, and for the good of her Clan. Later, she found out that Leafpool was her mother, and Crowfeather, a WindClan tom, was her Father. Since the warrior code meant so much to Hollyleaf, she couldn't stand being Half-Clan and being the daughter of a medicine cat. She blurted out the truth of Ashfur's murderer to her brothers then ran down a tunnel to escape........ Unfortunately, she didn't escape the way she wanted to. The tunnel collapsed and Hollyleaf was never heard of again. To keep her safe, Lionblaze and Jayfeather never revealed the secret of Ashfur's murdering to anyone. Instead, they said she chased a mouse down the tunnel to hunt, but died hunting for her clan. At least now, she would be known as a noble warrior, not one that killed her own Clanmate.

Several things: 1. Jaypaw learns that an old cat named Jay's Wing used to live by the lake with the early Tribe cats. He was the cat that decided for the early Tribe to go to the mountains. Jaypaw learned that he was Jay's Wing, who had come back to live by the lake. Hollyleaf and Lionblaze, he learned, had once been early Tribe cats also, but he didn't get to learn their history. 2. Jaypaw earns his Medicine Cat name, Jayfeather. 3. Jayfeather and his siblings learn that Ashfur used to love Squirrelflight, and are suspended over a fire because Ashfur has repented his love and is now trying to make Squirrelflight suffer loss. 4. Jayfeather and his siblings learn that Squirrelflight is not their real mother, which Squirrelflight tells Ashfur in an attempt to save them. Once they are back to safety and Ashfur has left, Squirrelflight confirms that what she has said was true, but Brambleclaw didn't know about any of this. 5. Ashfur keeps his mouth shut, but Jayfeather hears him asking Firestar to go to the gathering, undoubtedly so that he can announce the truth to all the cats at the gathering. Jayfeather warns his siblings and Squirrelflight about what he overheard. The day of the Gathering, Ashfur is found dead in the WindClan-ThrunderClan stream that marks the border with a warrior's wound in his neck. 6. Squirrelflight is very uneasy while the Clan talks about what might have happened, and The Clan prepares for battle to attack WindClan for the loss of Ashfur. Why did hollyleaf kill ashfur if she was going to tell the clans anyway?
In the books as you probably know Ashfur nearly murdered Jaypaw, Hollypaw and lionpaw (jayfeather, Hollyleaf, Lionblaze) and squirrelflight. Knowing that Ashfur was going to tell the clans her story she Killed Ashfur. But she still thought that Squirrelflight was a Horrible liar and hated her Like Ashfur did. So she told the clans to make everyone else feel the same about her not real mother. But running away in shock and terror she died in the overflowing caves. This just goes to show anger and hatred can change a cat/person forever.
Will squirrelflight and brambleclaw get back together?
Yes and No. Here is the story. It seems long, but read it, because it is very informational. Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw, as you probable know, fall in love on the journey to the sun-drown place. They were in love, but on the journey to the lake, tensions arose. Ashfur also loved Squirrelflight, and Brambleclaw tried to get her back. They had more fights, but in the end they became mates. Ashfur was horribly angry. They had kits together, Hollykit (Hollyleaf),Lionkit (Lionblaze), and Jaykit (Jayfeather). Poor Jayfeather was blind! But he was very grumpy because he had to be a medicine cat. Anyways, everyone believed that those kits belonged to Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw. But two cats, Leafpool (Squirrelflight's sister and medicne cat) and Squirrelflight, know that they aren't. The truth is revealed in fire and storm in book five of the Power of Three series. But you find out the real parents in book six of the Power of Three series. They are Leafpool and Crowfeather. Hollyleaf killed Ashfur in order for him to keep quiet and not reveal the secret at a Gathering. But Hollyleaf herself told everyone at a Gathering. Because of this, Leafpool quit her medicine cat duties, and Jayfeather took over. Hollyleaf felt angry and sort of went mad, so she escapes to the hidden tunnels. The tunnels colapse and she is believed to die. She shouldn't have been doubted of her survival skills. (Oops! I said too much!) Anyways, Brambleclaw broke up with Squirrelflight. It is not said yet if they get back together. I hope they do, because they are a perfect match!

It is unknown. I think that, even though Brambleclaw now hates Squirrelflight, they are still technically mates, whethere they like it or not. I think Brambeclaw would feel betrayed, but i think he still loves Squirrelflight deep down.
