It is sometimes a choice doctors will use to treat strep if drugs such as the Z Pak have not yielded results. Ideally you need to have a throat culture taken to determine whether it is a bacterial or viral infection. Antibiotics won't cure a viral sore throat; time will.

∙ 9y agoNo. It does not. You should use penicillin V 250 mg three time a day for ten days. Incomplete dose may lead to rheumatic fever.

∙ 9y agoSulfmethoxazole should not be used to treat the sore throat. It is bacteriostatic and is not effective. Sulfa drug may lead to agranulocytosis and may present with sore throat.

∙ 9y agoCotrimoxazole ( sulfa trimeth) should not be used to treat the strep throat. You can get aganulocytosis, as a adverse effect of sulfa drug. It can present as severe sore throat.
